My father’s family usually has some kind of reunion on the 4th of July. In the year that my oldest child was first in existence for the 4th, my uncle called my brother and invited us to go. My brother covered his phone microphone and asked me if we wanted to go. I wasn’t feeling like it that day and told him to say “no” and give any reason he wanted, which would have included possibly just blaming me for no one going. What happened next is one for the history books.

I think of myself as a pretty dang good guitarist. I can be pretty cocky about it and get snooty with people who claim to play guitar but only play D, C, G or power chords and have no knowledge of any guitar techniques. My castle made of sand could easily be crumbled if I ran into any of the people on this list. Most people haven’t even heard of them but I deem them to be among the great guitar players. So here they are in no particular order:

I never asked my father-in-law for his daughter’s hand in marriage. My defense has always been that she told me I didn’t need to, but that is a lame excuse as I should have just done it anyway. Luckily he is one of the coolest people on the planet and is very, very kind to me. Having two daughters myself now, I can say that I would want this little rite of passage to take place, but if my girls like guys who are as amazing as I am I could overlook not having it. All of that aside, let’s look at what triggered all these feelings:

There are few things as wonderful as hearing someone cover a song and make it sound new and refreshing to you. In fact there are some groups that I only enjoy through the filter of being covered by someone else (Beatles). If you feel as I do, oh, you should be as excited as I am about what I came across today.

When planning the crime of the century it is probably a good idea to make sure you haven’t accidentally dialed 911 with dispatch now recording your plans.
